school conduct
PAUL ROBESON HIGH SCHOOL CONDUCT POLICIES Discipline Code Robeson HS follows the Uniform Discipline Code of the Chicago Public Schools. Students are under the authority of the principal and staff. Provocative conduct or hostile actions are unacceptable. Students are expected to show courtesy and proper respect to everyone. Any student who violates any provision of the Uniform Discipline Code, or who fails to comply with the directives of authorized school personnel, shall be considered to be in violation of school regulations, and shall be subject to consequences including detention, parent conferences, suspension, or expulsion from school. Harassment, Intimidation, Sexual Discrimination A learning and working environment that is free from all forms of harassment, hazing, and intimidation, regardless of reason, shall be maintained at all times. It shall be a violation of policy for any member of the staff or student body to harass or threaten any other member of the staff or student body by conduct or communication. Note also that any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or intimidation based on sexual preference is absolutely prohibited. Any such incidents are to be reported to authorities. Dress Standard Students are required to dress in proper uniform attire at all times, as follows:
Robeson operates on a "closed campus" system for students. This means that all students are to remain in the school facility during school hours, including lunch periods, unless officially excused in writing. Except for certain special work-study or college articulation programs, there are no shortened-day programs at Robeson. Hallways and Corridors Students are expected to be in class during class time. No one is allowed in the halls or locker area without a pass except during passing time. Student Identification Every student will be issued a photo identification card. Students are required to carry this ID card at all times when on school property and to present it at the request of any staff member. The ID card is used for admission to the school building, the lunchroom, the media center, and all school activities. The first ID card issued to the student is free; replacements will cost $5.00 each. Prohibited Items All students and visitors are subject to search upon entry to the building. A partial list of items which are not permitted is as follows:
Telephones School telephones are to be used by students only in an emergency and with permission from appropriate staff members. Personal messages for students are not accepted. Visitors Parents/guardians are always welcome to visit the school. In order for their visits to be productive, parents are urged to make an appointment with the staff member whom they wish to see. Otherwise, visitors will be limited to persons on official business. Relatives and friends of students may not attend school with them. All visitors are to obtain visitors' passes by checking in at the main office. Acceptable Use Policy All students and staff are subject to the provisions of the Chicago Public Schools Acceptable Use Policy when using district owned technology resources, such as the computer networks and Internet connections. Violations of the Acceptable Use Policy can result in loss of computer network privileges and other sanctions. The full text of the Acceptable Use Policy is available at the Chicago Public Schools website (http://www.cps.k12.il.us) or from the school's technology coordinator. Back To Top STUDENT SERVICES AVAILABLE AT PAUL ROBESON HIGH SCHOOL Division Teacher Every student is assigned to a division. The student's Division Teacher is the first and sometimes best resource for obtaining information, solving problems, and making decisions. Counseling Office Robeson High School maintains a staff of four counselors, whose offices are located in room 248. Counselors are available to assist students with college, career, and high school planning, and are a resource for students who need assistance with classes, placement, and adjustment. The counselors also coordinate the testing program. Ancillary Staff The school has a full-time Social Worker, and a part-time Psychologist, School Nurse, and Speech Pathologist, all of whom are available to work with individual students in need or to assist in Crisis Counseling if necessary. Students who are in need of services can be referred by their Division Teacher or Counselor. Back To Top PAUL ROBESON HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICIES Attendance Affects Grades Good school attendance is important to success in school. All students are expected to attend school every day, on time, and to be present in all classes, advisory, and division periods. During the Spring Semester of 2002, the Chicago Public Schools instituted a policy which mandates that class grades be lowered for students whose attendance is poor. This places an even greater responsibility upon students and their parents to minimize the number of absences from school and from class. Excused Absences A student's absence is considered "Excused" if 1) it is due to illness or injury of the student; death of an immediate family member; or observance of a religious occasion; and 2) it is verified by the parent or guardian. If a student is to be absent from school, the parent/guardian is requested to call the attendance office (535-3800, ext. 111) before 9:30 A.M. on the day of the absence. A written note, signed by the parent/guardian, is to accompany the student on his or her return, and will be collected by the division teacher. Unexcused Absences Any unverified absence or absence which does not fall into one of the above categories is considered unexcused, and may affect the student's grade in class or promotion. Truancy A student with excessive unexcused absences or who is absent from school without a valid cause is considered truant. The school will pursue truancy action in such cases, which may include parent conferences, police visits to the home, court proceedings, notification to other state agencies, and withdrawal of the student from school. Early Dismissals Early dismissals from school will only be granted in cases of emergency, as determined by the Attendance Officer or Counselor. A student may not be released unless the parent/guardian is notified and comes to the school to sign the student out in person. Tardiness All students are expected to arrive at school in time to be in class by 8:00 A.M. Students should make allowances for the time it takes for bus transportation, if applicable; weather; the process of entry into the building; and visits to lockers. Students who are excessively tardy to school will be subject to consequences which may include parent conferences, detention or suspension. Students are expected to be on time for every class. Again, excessive class tardiness will result in consequences such as those listed above. Field Trips and Permission Slips From time to time, some students may be invited to participate in field trips for a purpose related to the educational program. Students who participate in such field trips will be considered present in school for that day. Before any such trip is taken, a completed and signed Field Trip Permission Form shall be secured from each student who plans to participate in the activity. No student shall be permitted to participate in any such activity unless and until the parent/guardian's signature is obtained on a Permission Form. Medical Compliance All students are required to be in current medical compliance, according to state law and Chicago Public Schools policy. For high school students, this means that they must have a current physical examination, signed by a doctor, on file as of the 9th grade, and that all applicable immunizations ("shots") must be up-to-date. Most high school students will need a DTP booster shot somewhere around the 10th grade. Evidence of medical compliance (signed physical exam forms and immunization records verified by a physician or clinic) are to be submitted to the school nurse. Students who are out of medical compliance may be excluded from school until they can provide the appropriate records. In such cases, absences will be considered unexcused. Medical Excuse from Physical Education Students assigned to Physical Education (Gym) classes may not be excused from those classes for medical reasons unless a doctor's statement is received explicitly directing the student's excusal. In such cases, the student must still report to the class, but will not dress or participate in the physical activities. Homebound Services Homebound services are available on a limited basis to students who have long-term illnesses or disabilities which preclude school attendance. Documentation from a physician is necessary. Services are coordinated by the Counseling Department. Back To Top GENERAL POLICIES AND INFORMATION Advisory Every student is assigned to an Advisory. In general, a student's Advisory group and teacher are the same as his or her Division. Advisory meets every Wednesday at 8:00 A.M. for 45 minutes. During this period, Advisory groups will participate in various activities relating to the high school process, ranging from specific discussions of school policies, to activities from the planning guide which contains this handbook, to activities aimed at improvement of reading skills. Students are expected to attend Advisory with the same promptness and regularity with which they attend any regular class. Emergency Drills From time to time, emergency drills (such as fIfe drills) will be held. Evacuation procedures are posted in every room. Students are to treat every drill as though it is real, evacuate the building quickly and quietly, and follow the directions of staff and emergency personnel. Fund Raising Activities No fund raising activities are to take place on school property without the express approval of the Principal and Local School Council. Lunch Applications Breakfast and lunch are served daily in the lunchroom. Costs of meals are published by the food service program. Free or Reduced Fee lunches are available to students whose families qualify. Applications must be received before the 20th day of school in order to receive or continue service. The same forms are used in determining the level of federal and state funding the school receives each year. For both reasons, students are encouraged to bring their forms, completed and signed by a parent/guardian, to school in a prompt and timely manner. Keeping Records Current From time to time, the school and its staff may find it necessary to reach the home, especially if there is any sort of emergency. Parents and students are asked to notify the Attendance Office immediately of any change in address, telephone, or emergency contact information so that our records can remain up-to-date. Textbooks Most students are loaned textbooks in each of their classes. Each textbook contains a bar-code label and serial number, and is tracked by computer. Lost or damaged textbooks will be charged to the students to whom they are issued. Official records will be held for students who have textbook debts until either the books are returned or the debts are cleared. Activity Fee Every student is assessed an Activity Fee of $50 per year. This fee covers various student activities (concerts, assemblies, et cetera) held throughout the school year, and funds the production of the school yearbook as well as certain other administrative costs. Students who have not paid their yearly fees may find their records held until that fee obligation is cleared. Locks and Lockers As a convenience, students are given the opportunity to sign up for locker space early in the school year. In general, students are assigned two per locker. Use of a school-supplied combination lock is included. Students are responsible for memorizing their locker combinations, and keeping them confidential; and they use the locker facilities at their own risk. The school cannot be responsible for any items lost or stolen From the lockers. Missing or damaged locks, or damaged lockers, will be charged to the students to whom the lockers were assigned.
